b'FROM THE COOS DESKTransformation, the Path ForwardTRACY ANTONEChief Operating Officer, Chiefs of OntarioS hekoliOn behalf of the Chiefs of Ontario Secretariat, I would like to welcome you to the sixth edition of the official Chiefs of Ontario magazine, Advocate. Here at Chiefs of Ontario, we are very excited to release another edition of our biannual magazine, and I encourage all our readers to provide insight and feedback so we can continue to evolve and tailor each publication to be accessible and inclusive for our diverse and sometimes underrepresented audience. The theme of this edition of the Advocateeconomic developmentis especially fitting for the current political climate and the challenges faced by First Nations in Canada. Within this edition, you will find important topics ranging from sustainability, resource development, creating mutually beneficial economic partnerships and, ultimately, how Chiefs of Ontario and First Nations leadership in Ontario is renewing the path forward to address the socioeconomic impacts within our communities. Our theme to move forward on our own path demonstrates the work that has been accomplished and sets the direction for our future generations. At this time of creating our own path, we now must look through a focused lens of effectively coordinating and communicating in a shifting political climate, where First Nations are directly engaged on issues within their traditional territoriesin the short term and long termand move into the space of economic prosperity and true Nationhood. The path forward for economic progress lies within a transparent agreement between Indigenous peoples and the Crown. As we witness the changes within the new Progressive Conservative government in Ontario and the federal government, with the upcoming election in October 2019, Chiefs of Ontario has been diligently working alongside First Nations leadership to develop a strategic approach for a process of struc-tured and fair political dialogue. First Nations within Ontario and across Turtle Island are on the cusp of transforma-tive change. As we continue to experience challenges as to how to maintain a relation-ship that is sustainable, responsible and solution driven, this has required an investiga-tion into the types of tripartite issues that are common to First Nations within Ontario and ongoing research to determine the best processes to move our issues forward. We are working hard to collaborate and push toward the dialogues needed in order to best respond to the needs of First Nations. The Secretariat will continue to provide the support and advocacy for Ontario First Nations in their assertion of their inherent Treaty rights and jurisdiction with both Crown governments.Yaw^ko12l ISSUE 1 2019C hIEfS ofo ntarIoA dvocAte magazInE'
