Heres a look at some key players from the next generation of Indigenous business:BAILEY HILLOrenn ClothingNineteen-year-old Bailey Hill from Six Nations of the Grand River is a first-year business student at the University of British Columbia (UBC). During the pandemic, she designed and launched Orenn Clothing, a high-quality loungewear line inspired by Haudenosauneemythology. I always knew I wanted to have a business, and I really like loungewear particularly, so I kind of put those two things together, as well as my passion for educating others about our culture, Hill says.Hill began by taking pre-orders for her designs, using that to cover the bulk of the clothing costs, and imme-diately invested all profits back into the business. The biggest challenge was definitely the money, she says. A lot of it was coming out of my own pocket in the begin-ning. She credits a consistent social media presence for the brands steady growth: I really wanted to have a set aesthetic, like the way my clothes look and the way the brand comes off. That really helped draw people to the brand and to my pages. Word of mouth also played an important role. People would see my clothes on people on my reserve and theyd ask them about it, Hill explains. Thats where Id get a lot of people messaging me, even from places likeHamilton. In the future, Hill hopes to open up a physical store and move towards manufacturing her own hoodies and sweaters, picking out the fabrics as well as the designs.Lifeworks is hiring mental health professionals to promote total well-being across Canada.In-person and remote roles available! iCBT TherapistBilingual Post-traumatic Specialist EAP CounsellorWorkplace Support Program Counsellor Bilingual Crisis Support CounsellorCorporate Workshop FacilitatorMake a difference in the mental health community. Please visit https://lifeworks.com/en/careers or www.linkedin.com/company/lifeworks/jobs/20 FORWARD MAGAZINE | VOLUME 1 2022'
