b'Holistic provisions for alterations to existing commercial roofs for climate adaptation are currently under development.However, if no significant documentation is available to estab-lish the condition of the roof, a non-destructive investigation must be performed from the very beginning. The results are validated with randomized test cuts before the existing resistance is quanti-fied through destructive forensic investigation. Since commercial roofs have very large surface areas, there can be anomalies, and it is important to have accurate information. To achieve this, a protocol is being developed for test cuts to identify the size requirements, the frequency and a confidence level for the results obtained. The information extracted from the forensic investigation will be vali-dated with future climatic load requirements to determine if the roofs resistance exceeds the future climatic load requirements. If the resistance of the current roof is greater than the future climatic load requirements, then the roof is considered a Climate Adapt-able Roof. If the resistance is lower than the future climate load re-quirements, then the alteration table is referred to. The assessment of the condition can be summarized in Figure 3.In the event that the roof falls under the failed category, then partial compliance with the flow chart is required. The alteration that must be followed is implemented and verified to ensure the required climatic resistance is met.STEP 3: Determination of Alteration OptionsVarious alteration options are being reviewed and will be dis-cussed with all provincial roof contractor associations.STEP 4: Verification of the Altered ConditionOnce the necessary alteration has been implemented, it is nec-essary to verify that the planned design was installed as per speci-fication. To achieve the verification, the flow chart has to be im-plemented once more to ensure the resistance of the altered roof exceeds the future climatic load by undertaking the following steps:Incorporating future climatic data in the design;Selecting an appropriate alteration that achieves a higherresistance than the calculated load; andVerifying the field installation of the alteration.By following the three steps outlined above, the sweet spot of the holistic approach is achieved (Figure 4).Holistic provisions for alterations to existing commercial roofs for climate adaptation are currently under development.
