As bandwidth has increased and the internet has become significantly more essential to everyday practices around the globe, people have increasingly relied on personal online platforms to share their experiences with others. Rising to the top of the algorithms, Indigenous women are making change by creatively sharing their stories and promoting awareness of Indigenous cultures and the issues affecting Indigenous people. Michelle Chubb, who is Swampy Cree from Bunibonibee Cree Nation in northern Manitoba, has been sharing her story online since 2020. Once considered to be quiet and shy, Chubb now speaks online to a combined following of one million people, making her one of the most powerful Indigenous voices online to date. Honestly, it changed a lot for me, especially living in the city, she shares. It was lonely, because I was away from the community, my people, my culture and away from the language. Growing up, Chubb felt like she was living a double life: one in Winnipeg and one in her home community. At school, she was quiet and kept to herself; she often didnt feel comfortable sharing her culture with her non-Indigenous classmates. As she got older, she turned to social media as an outlet to express herself and connect with others. Ive always wanted to be that role model for the kids, because I never had that, Chubb explains.
