b'MESSAGE FROM THE ONTARIO REGIONAL CHIEFHonouring50 YearsABRAM BENEDICT Ontario Regional Chief S he:kon,It is my honour to welcome you to this special 50th anniversary edition of Advocate. For five decades, the Chiefs of Ontario has served as a united political voice for First Nations in this region, rooted in the principles of inherent rights, self-determination and Nationhood. This issue, Honouring 50 Years: Advocacy Rooted in Sovereignty, reflects not only on our past but also on the work still ahead to uphold our responsibilities to the land, to one another and to the next generation. This edition lifts up stories that speak to the strength and future of our Nations. Youll read about Wabun Tribal Councils mining policy, which is returning deci-sion making to where it belongs: in the hands of First Nations. It is a powerful example of what sustainable development can look like when guided by our laws, knowledge systems and consent. We are also proud to spotlight Chief Shelly Moore-Frappier of Temagami First Nation, whose leadership on mining, education and sovereignty is helping shape stronger futures for her people. Her story is one of clarity, courage and relentless advocacy, whether opposing harmful legislation like Bill C-53 or investing in land-based education and youth development. And we hear from Carter Carpenter, newly elected co-chair of the Ontario First Nations Young Peoples Council (OFNYPC). Carters journey, from isola-tion during the pandemic to youth leadership at the provincial level, speaks to the power of connection and the importance of supporting Two-Spirit and young First Nations voices. His vision for healing, empowerment and joyful community building reflects the future we are working towards. As we mark 50 years of advocacy, we do so with gratitude for those who built the foundation and with commitment to the rising generations. To every Elder, Chief, youth, Knowledge Keeper and community member who has shaped this move-ment: nia:wenk:wa. Let us honour the past by continuing to walkforward, together. In strength and unity,Ni:wen12l I ssue1 2025C hIefs ofo ntarIoA dvocAte magazIne'
