b'CSAM NEWSFROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF CSAMLeading the Conversation on Psychological SafetyThe construction industry has always understood the importance of physical safety, and of preventing falls, controlling hazards and protecting workers from harm. But today, the conversation is expanding to include something equally vital: psychological safety. In May 2023, the Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba amended its policy to recognize psychological hazards as legitimate workplace risks. Building on that, the June 2025 amendments to Manitobas Workplace Safety and Health Act (Bill 29) introduced new provisions under the general objects and purposes of the Act to enable workers to work in psychologically safe workplaces. These updates are intended to strengthen our provinces safety framework and enhance employer responsibilities in ensuring the safety, health and welfare at work of all workers. This marks a significant step forward for Manitoba. Employers are now expected to assess not only physical hazards but also psychological onesfactors such as stress, workload, harassment and organizational culture. Its a shift that aligns with the Acts enduring focus on worker welfare, recognizing that health and safety extend beyond the body to include the mind.At the Construction Safety Association of Manitoba (CSAM), we believe this evolution requires leadership. Its not enough to identify risks; we must respond to them. Thats why CSAM: THE Safety Conference 2026 will feature a series of leadership sessions dedicated to mental health and psychological safety. These sessions are designed to provide practical tools and strategies to help employers assess, respond and lead effectively in this new landscape. The future of safety leadership lies in understanding that mental health is not a separate issueits a core part of every workplaces safety culture. By addressing psychological hazards with the same diligence we apply to physical ones, we can build stronger organizations and a healthier industry.Together, we can continue leading the way toward a construction industry where every worker returns home safe, healthy and supported.Sean Scott Executive DirectorConstruction Safety Association of ManitobaVisit CSAMs website at constructionsafety.ca to learn more about safety and how we can help.28 BUILD MANITOBAwinnipegconstruction.ca'
