Not only is the city serviced by Via Rail across Canada, the newly-revamped Montréal Pierre Elliot Trudeau Airport (YUL) offers direct flights to over 150 global destinations. Less than a three-hour plane ride from major American cities such as New York, Washington, Chicago and Atlanta, the airport is a mere 20 kilometres (12 miles) from downtown Montréal. Formerly known as Montréal-Dorval, the airport was renamed Montréal-Trudeau on January 1, 2004, to recognize Canada’s 15th Prime Minister. Over its 78 years of operation, the airport has evolved into a major hub in Eastern Canada, and was recently ranked in the top 10 best airports in North America, and 62nd best in the world. Today, the Montréal-Trudeau airport is the third busiest in Canada with 19.4 million passengers passing through its gates and 240,159 aircraft movements recorded in 2018. Once in Montréal, taxis are readily available outside the airport terminal to take visitors to the downtown core at a flat rate of approximately $40.
