b'HEALING INITIATIVESThere are a lot of people talking about land back, literally meaning land back to Indigenous people. That the sovereignty of Indigenous people and the ability to govern our own lands and our own selves is para-mount to who we are, and always has been, she says. For Belcourt, this means trying to get back to the place where her ancestors werenot in terms of going back in time but in the sense of adopting the same way of thinking. Being on the land and learning how to survive or learning how to harvest medicines or animals comes with the inherent teachings already built into it and thats part of making us whole again, she says. With an ever-increasing awareness of the climate crisis that were in, and with corporate capitalism disempowering masses of people from having control over things like their own water, Belcourt feels it is imperative now more than ever to bring young people back to the land, to allow them to connect with it so that they can learn the ways in which their ancestors were good stewards. Indigenous people have really deep knowledge on how to live in balance with Mother Earth; we have this knowledge already built into us, explains Belcourt. The Nimkii Aazhibikong camp aims to teachIts within everything that were taught. Its the people traditional crafts and customs, includingway our ancestors lived for thousands of years. So cooking traditional foods Indigenous people have a lot to offer the earth and they have a lot to offer to other human beings.Largest networkin the neighbourhoodtbaytel.net/mobilityTM Rogers and the Mobius Design are trademarks of or used under license from Rogers Communication Inc. or an affiliate.56Spring/Summer 2022'
