b'COVER STORYThe project incorporated a trauma-informed approach, with art therapists guiding participants through various mediums such as painting, beadwork and clay. The therapists created a safe space for participants to express their emotions and honour their loved ones, Green explains. She highlights the significance of storytelling and artistic expression in the healing process, emphasizing that we know healing occurs when indi-viduals can share their stories without being overwhelmed by emotion. Helping Indigenous women get to that place is critical. Eleven participants, many of whom had never engaged in art before, were empowered to create meaningful pieces representing their lost loved ones. Its important to recognize the depth and complexity of these individuals beyond their tragic circumstances, Green says. She emphasizes that there is an urgent need to normalize safety over violence, particularly in communities where the threat of violence against Indigenous women persists, and that systemic changes are called for to prioritize safety and healing. My involvement in the project coincided with the COVID-19 period, which made it challenging to set up because we had to work online instead of meeting in person, says Ann McGuire,Art project completed by Ann McGuire.
