b'FROM OUR PRESIDENTEvolving Innovation in the Construction IndustryThe theme of this issue is technology. The construction industry is often considered a laggard when it comes to the use of technology, either in company operations or in the systems installed into todays new building or renovation projects. However, nothing is further from the truth, and hopefully we can address some of these misconceptions in this issue of Build Manitoba. The construction industry was an early adopter of communication technology and transitioned rapidly into the use of digital construction documents almost two decades ago. Our wide-format printer is pretty lonely these days! Today, we hear lots of discussions about complimentary software systems that assist in estimating, job costing and project managementperhaps transitioning from the early legacy softwareand the struggle to find a system that does it all. The holy grail of construction software solutions is likely elusive. Instead, contractors are exploring multiple systems and the integration of different packages. Add mobile devices and remote environments, and things can get really complicated and expensive! But this is happening today. The building systems side of this equation is equally fascinatingsomething I learn every time we add a new element to the WCA building on Waverley. Building controls are no longer just HVACit is common to see HVAC, lighting controls, occupancy, door access and security CCTV included in building specifications. Each one of these systems is relatively simple, but putting them all together takes careful design and execution. We are currently having some interesting conversations regarding the integration of building energy management systems and total building control, including all the AV presentation equipment we have become so dependent upon. These discussions include educating owners about the capability of these systems, coordinating installation and providing education as to their use. In this issue there is an excellent article that explores this from WCAs new ICT Committee. We also feature several new construction projects, including the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada, that are utilizing these systems in exciting new ways. I hope you enjoy this issue.Have a safe and restful holiday and a happy new year.Ronald Hambley, President8 BUILD MANITOBAwinnipegconstruction.ca'
