b'CSAM NEWSFROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF CSAMEnsuring Fall Protection in Manitobas Construction IndustryAs the Executive Director of the Construction Safety Association of Manitoba, I am dedicated to the well-being and safety of our construction workforce. One of the most critical concerns we face in the industry is the risk of falls. Fall protection is a paramount issue that demands our immediate attention and proactive measures to safeguard the lives of our workers. The construction sector in Manitoba plays a pivotal role in our provinces growth, but it also exposes workers to potential fall hazards at elevated work sites. Falls remain a leading cause of serious injuries and fatalities in the construction industry, making it imperative that we address this issue comprehensively. If you use personal fall protection equipment or are exposed to falling from heights, our Working at Heights course has met the training accreditation standard. CSAM is also an accredited training provider of the newly established Manitoba Safety & Health Training Standards (MSHTS) program. We have also developed an insightful YouTube video toolbox talk on fall protection, aiming to educate workers and employers on the importance of fall prevention and the proper use of safety equipment. In this 15-minute video, we emphasize the significance of conducting thorough risk assessments before commencing any work at heights, how to identify potential fall hazards and what controls would be suitable to implement, such as guardrails, safety nets, self-restraint or personal fall arrest systems. We highlight the necessity of providing adequate training to workers who use fall protection equipment or who may be exposed to a fall from heights. Workers trained to the proper MSHTS accreditation standard will meet legislative requirements and significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents.CSAM urges employers to foster a culture of safety, where workers are encouraged to report any unsafe conditions or practices without fear of retribution. By fostering open communication, we can promptly identify and rectify fall hazards. Additionally, the toolbox talk video emphasizes the importance of keeping work areas clean and organized. Cluttered and poorly maintained work environments can lead to tripping hazards, adding to the risk of falls.I firmly believe that fall protection is not just a compliance issue, but a moral obligation. Our workforce deserves to return home safely to their families after each workday. CSAMs objectives include the development of information, resources, tools and training to prevent accidents and enable contractors to meet their legislated responsibilities. In conclusion, fall protection is a critical concern in Manitobas construction industry. Our associations YouTube video(@csammanitoba) on this subject strives to empower workers and employers with the information they need to prevent falls and create a safer work environment. By implementing proper fall protection measures and training workers in the MSHTS Working at Heights standard, we can most likely protect from potential fall hazards, reducing accidents, injuries and fatalities in our industry.Sean Scott Executive Director Construction Safety Association of Manitoba For more information and to learn how to request an assessment on YOUR jobsite, visit youtube.com/@csammanitoba.
