b'FROM OUR CHAIRBuilding Tomorrows WorkforceAddressing the shortage of skilled people in construction continues to be a pillar priority and strategic focus for the Winnipeg Construction Association. For more than a decade, WCA has made a focused effort to narrow the skilled trades gap in our industry, hosting and sponsoring multiple initiatives and events every year and supporting the activities of Manitoba Women in Construction (MWC) and Young Construction Leaders of Manitoba (YCLM).On April 18, MWC and WCA hosted more than 90 Grades 5 and 6 girls, engaging them in interactive trade demonstrations and introducing them to the opportunities in the construction industry at Unlocking the Toolkit. The event, held in WCAs Construction Education Centre, proved to be a pivotal occasion to encourage these young women to consider a career in construction. Since women continue to be underrepresented in the industry, its essential we continue to work together to provide opportunities like this. Thank you to the many female tradespeople and role models who took time to talk with these students and show them just how fulfilling a career in construction can be. Read more about the event on page 26.The Manitoba Construction Career Expo was back in its original May time slot this year. The popular event presented more than 1,300 high school students with occupations ranging from plumbing and pipefitting, carpentry, masonry, heavy equipment operating, concrete and more. Check out all the interactive exhibits and exhibitors who made the day memorable on page 24.YCLM continues to inspire young industry leaders with project site tours, educational sessions and networking events. Recently this group celebrated a decade of success at their annual Wine & Cheese evening and enjoyed a round on the greens at their YCLM Golf Tournament. For more on their social calendar, turn to page 13.Finally, I am pleased to share that WCA is supporting our industrys future workforce by establishing an endowment fund at the Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology. The series of awards will benefit students in a variety of construction-related programs, including carpentry, electrical applications and industrial welding.
