Hosted by Lisa Abel, citizen of MChigeeng First Nation, Bemaadizijig Ganoonindwaa is produced by the Anishinabek Nations communications department, which is also responsible for publishing products such as the Anishinabek News and the Great Lakes Pow Wow Guide. When I explain the podcast to guests, I say that its meant to let our Anishinabek Nation citizens and the general public learn about the topics that the Anishinabek Nation is advocating for. So far, weve had podcasts about Anishinaabemowin, our health initiatives, the water, the land, says Abel. The Anishinabek Nation does have great communication through the Anishinabek News, our social media channels and website, along with other resources. I think a podcast will benefit the Anishinabek Nation and its citizens because its another popular way to reach people. A podcast is different because its a longer format, with longer interviews and more context. We can take the time to listen to stories from our Anishinabek citizens, Anishinabek Nation leaders, staff and allies.I think their passion for their work and our values as Anishinabek come through in our conversations every time.Anishinabek Nation communications director Marci Beckingagrees. The Anishinabek News has been in print for over 35 years; the Great Lakes Pow Wow Guide just celebrated 30 years. It is a natural progression to have another vehicle to explore topics that affect the lives of Anishinabek Nation citizens, says Becking.Other topics that Abel dives into are health transformation, Anishinaabemowin, 2SLGBTQIA+, child well-being, moose management, reconciliation and politics. The podcast is slowly gaining momentum on podcast-hosting platforms in a very competitive market.Abel is looking forward to the recordings of episodes that will add to the Deaabshkoo Gdaawmi: We Are All the Same online anti-hate, anti-racism initiative. She hopes that these episodes will be available for listeners by December 2024.36l I ssue1 2024/25C hIefs ofo ntarIoA dvocAte magazIne'
