b'FROM OUR PRESIDENTConstruction is at a CrossroadsAt the time of writing, we are in Code Red in Manitoba, and the daily virus numbers stubbornly refuse to drop. After media reports of stores selling non-essential goods and services, provincial restrictions have increased to only allow the sale of essential products, regardless of a businesss range of stock. Hopefully this will reinforce the basic message of staying home to help get case numbers back under control.Recently, there was a flurry of media attention around a large rural construction site that had a number of positive COVID-19 cases, which sparked several social media comments regarding poor site sanitation. I have had a few calls myself from whom I would call very progressive subcontractors suggesting that COVID precautions on some major sites are hit and miss. We all understand that construction sites are busy, ever-changing and a challenge at the best of times, but we need to do better. We are at a crossroads. The stark truth is that if there are construction sites that are not adhering to the fundamentals to prevent the spread of COVID, they put the entire industry at risk of being shut down.During one of our weekly calls with Minister of Economic Development and Training, Ralph Eichler, he indicated that they dont want to have to pick favourites, meaning the province doesnt want to lock down specific businesses that are selling non-essential goods or shut down industries that have previously been deemed essential. But at the same time, the virus numbers are climbing, and health-care professionals are expressing deep concern about ICU capacity. At some point the province will make the call if it appears our industry is a major source of transmission.Our message to the provincial government has been consistent: we want construction to remain open as an essential service, and we will do everything we can to ensure the health and safety of our employees and site workers. We know this has not been without challenges and extra expenses, but at this point everyone knows what they should be doing. We must ensure everyone is doing their part.We know this is top-of-mind for you and your team, but please remind everyone that the situation is critical, that PPE and COVID procedures are essential and that we all need to challenge those who are not following the rules.
