b'FROM OUR DIRECTOR OF STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENTAND ADVOCACYClarity and Fairness in Manitobas Construction Industry: WCAs InitiativesIn a bid to enhance transparency and efficiency in Manitobas construction sector, the Winnipeg Construction Association (WCA) launched the Manitoba Trade Definitions in 2019. The Manitoba Trade Definitions aim to delineate the roles and responsibilities of various trades involved in construction projects, fostering better clarity during bidding processes and throughout the construction phase. The Manitoba Trade Definitions book serves as a cornerstone document, providing a comprehensive framework that outlines the specific duties and obligations of each trade involved in a project. WCA revises and updates this document every two years; 2024 is a review year, with the new version to be released in January 2025.WCA encourages active participation from stakeholders, inviting them to contribute their perspectives and recommendations for refining the trade definitions book. WCA aims to ensure that the revised version of the book accurately reflects the current landscape and addresses any emerging challenges or complexities encountered in construction projects. The Manitoba Trade Definitions document is an essential resource for the industry that not only mitigates and clarifies roles and responsibilities, but also enhances overall project efficiency and effectiveness.Furthermore, as Manitoba braces for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in 2024, it is also time to look at a very unique piece of legislation in Manitoba: the Construction Industry Wages Act (CIWA). The CIWA is important legislation for the construction industry, setting minimum wage standards for tradespersons operating within the industrial, commercial and institutional (ICI) sector. By periodically reviewing and adjusting the wages schedule, CIWA ensures that compensation remains commensurate with the skill level and demands of the industry, thereby safeguarding the livelihoods of workers while fostering stability in the labour market.WCA has been advocating for the establishment of a provincial committee tasked with updating the wages schedule outlined in CIWA. The latest wage increase took effect on April 1, 2024, with no other wage increases scheduled. The establishment of a provincial committee dedicated to updating the wages schedule in CIWA represents a proactive measure aimed at addressing the evolving dynamics of the construction industry. In an era marked by rapid technological advancements and shifting economic landscapes, it is imperative to recalibrate wage structures to reflect market realities and uphold the principles of fairness and equity.WCAs initiatives to revise the Manitoba Trade Definitions book and advocate for the establishment of a provincial committee to update the wages schedule in CIWA are emblematic of its proactive stance towards promoting transparency, fairness and sustainability within the construction industry. By fostering collaboration and dialogue among stakeholders, WCA aims to lay the groundwork for a robust and resilient construction sector that can thrive in the face of evolving challengesand opportunities.Darryl Harrison6 BUILD MANITOBAwinnipegconstruction.ca'
