b'CSAM NEWSFROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF CSAMConstruction Falls Surge in Early 2025Manitobas construction industry has witnessed a concerning pattern in workplace safety during the first four months of 2025, with 17 serious fall-related incidents reported to Workplace Safety and Health (WSH). These incidents, ranging from ground-level falls to drops from heights of up to 30 feet, underscore the critical need for comprehensive safety training and consultation.To complicate the analysis of these serious incidents, there is also a troubling variety of scenarios. Multiple workers have fallen from scaffolding, including incidents where improper platform construction or inadequate guardrails contributed to the accidents. In several cases, workers fell through roof or floor openings, with one particular incident involving a 27-foot fall. Ladder safety has also emerged as a significant concern with multiple incidents, including one where a worker was found unconscious at the base of a ladder. Equally alarming was a scissor lift incident where workers fell between 20-30 feet.Many of these incidents could have been prevented through proper training, equipment inspection and adherence to safety protocols. The Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act and Regulation Part 14.1(1)(a) clearly states that fall protection must be implemented where there is a risk of a worker falling a vertical distance of three metres or more, yet compliance remains an ongoing challenge across a wide variety of work sites.The Construction Safety Association of Manitoba recognizes these challenges and offers comprehensive solutions through both training and consultation services.
