Well-respected both personally and corporately, Gordon has been a big supporter of the OIRCA. When asked to help out with important industry matters such as apprenticeship and roofer education, he has never said no. When I spoke to him recently, he went out of his way to mention all the great people he has met, competitor or otherwise, over the years in this industry. Gordon will not be retiring from his second passion, though – the management and leadership of the Gordon & Ruth Gooder Charitable Foundation, which he helped launch in 2010 in memory of Gordon and Ruth. The foundation is concerned about the welfare of young people who are disadvantaged due to their economic and/or social circumstances. To address the crisis of youth unemployment and underem- ployment, the foundation is focusing on ways to reduce barriers to meaningful employment and creating opportunities for sustainable careers, especially in the building sciences and trades – a worthy cause indeed.
