speaker spotlight good time? And I know I want it to be a good time, but I also want it to have some kind of profound “Aha!” moment where you go back and you become a better human being as it relates to it. Because that’s really what I do – I teach others how to be better human beings. CM&E: What inspired you to start public speaking? CB: Long story! I started my career in grocery and worked for Kellogg’s, Snapple, Labatt. During that period, one of my colleagues suggested I take a program called Dale Carnegie and How to Win Friends and Influence People. I’m not affiliated with the program at all, but I took the program, eventually became an instructor of the program and just kind of fell in love with it. I got the bug of not being the star of said show, but recognizing through the orator, the vocal word, that you could have an impact on somebody else. It could be to make them laugh, it could be to inspire them, to teach them, whatever the thing was, but you could do something with your words. And so that was the start of it. CM&E: Understanding that everybody brings something different to the table, in broad strokes, what do you think makes a good keynote speaker? CB: We’re all human beings having a human existence, so to treat anybody other than kind is unconscionable. That’s my mantra. What makes someone a great public speaker is humility and a lack of ego, and the desire to serve. It’s not about putting on a show. It’s not about the flashy lights. It’s not about the fancy PowerPoint slides. It’s about understanding who’s in the audience and taking whatever knowledge that you’ve acquired – and you’ve been afforded the luxury of talking in front of a group – and giving that to your audience. A lot of people don’t get that. CM&E: Sounds like generosity and a generosity of spirit plays a big part. CB: It’s the most important part. Even though I do this for a living, I still get nervous, which just means I care, right? It’s actually good to be slightly nervous. You still have to be prepared, but how I got my butterflies flying back in formation was to meditate around, “Caroline, this isn’t about you. I know that you’re going to have a couple thousand eyes staring at you, but this isn’t about you. This is about delivering the message that you’ve been asked to deliver.” FROM MEETINGS TO MIXERS FROM BREAKOUTS TO BANQUETS FROM AWARD SHOWS TO TRADE SHOWS From elegant, wide-open spaces to elevated theatre seating, the space adapts, so you don’t have to.
