Employees from the member company grace the cover of WCAs 2021/22 Education Program, and for good reason. Not only does Transcona Roofing place an emphasis on professional development with an in-house training program called Transcona Roofing University (TRU), but management also enrolls employees in WCA courses, with 10 individuals participating in the most recent round of Building Supervisors for Tomorrow (BST). According to Rich Marchetti, President of Transcona Roofing, TRU was established in 2020 and is designed to develop the next generation of forepersons and leaders within the company. We found that our employees received great technical training from working in the field, but there was also a great need for management training to help them become effective leaders, Marchetti says, explaining that the company promotes based on technical ability in the field, but being a foreperson also requires leadership. Our training program for the next generation of forepersons is built around the BST curriculum delivered through the WCA, as well as the Dale Carnegie program, project labour costing, project planning and a blueprint reading course.Marchetti views the program as an investment in his people and his business. To be a subcontractor you need equipment and employees; however, to be a successful subcontractor you need to continually invest and develop your team, he explains. Equipment is easy to acquire, whereas developing a team takes years. Our biggest asset is the team we have developed who can produce projects with a high level of quality, safely and on budget and time.Issue 3 Fall Edition 2021 BUILD MANITOBA 21'
