b'COVER STORYbalance. Weve always understood how to make sure there are enough animals for the next generation to survive not just for us but for all species, says Belcourt.MOTHER EARTHWhere does the COVID-19 pandemic fit in the balance? COVID-19 is a consequence of breaking traditional laws, explains Belcourt. There are laws of this earth we must abide by. Otherwise, there are consequences, not only to our well-being but the well-being of all species on the earth and of the earth itself. When we stop respecting the animals, there is a consequence to our actions. Its not a punishment, and it would be wrong to think of it like that. Its more like if you hold your hand over a flame, it will burn your hand. Or if you dont take your garbage out of your house, your house will stink. The rules and laws of this earth are factual. If we dont take care of this planet, we get sick and so does everything else. Uprising: The Power of Mother Earth, a retrospective of Belcourts 25-year-plus career, opens November 16 at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg, Ontario. Land and water protector banners created by Belcourt and collaborator Isaac Murdoch accom-pany the 36 paintings that will be exhibited. With the COVID-19 pandemic, there is uncertainty about the exhib-its opening. Lets hope the gallery considers going online so we can view Belcourts work.
