15 Issue 2 Summer Edition 2019 BUILD MANITOBA WCA EDUCATION PROJECT STRIKES GOLD The Richardson Innovation Centre is the newest project to be designated a Gold Seal Project. According to John Bockstael, President and CEO of Bockstael Construction, the design-builder on the Richardson Innovation Centre, the state-of-the-art project is well suited for Gold Seal designation. “Knowing the kind of client Richardson is, they’re ahead of things as a leader in their industry; they’re also interested in seeing growth in all the industries,” says Bockstael. “(Gold Seal) is all about drawing attention to the main workforce that there are career paths here.” On June 3, 2019, Chuck Cohen, Richardson’s Senior Vice- President, Technology, along with Winnipeg Construction Association President Ron Hambley and Bockstael, signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), recognizing the Richardson Innovation Centre as a Gold Seal Project and committing to work together to promote Gold Seal as part of the construction project. Gold Seal Projects showcase the value of Gold Seal Certified professionals and reflect experience, competency and excellence in the management of a construction project. The purpose is to promote Gold Seal Certification to non-certified workers and to honour those who have earned their certification by the end of the project. Want to go for the gold? Contact Peggy Zurkan, Manager, Learning & Development, at peggy@winnipegconstruction.ca or visit winnipegconstruction.ca to start your Gold Seal journey. “It’s a building that we’re really proud of and we deal with a lot of the same issues that John deals with in his business, in terms of being able to get new people in the industry and get their level of education higher than it is and to get the skills that are needed to get the job done,” says Cohen. “We’re sympathetic to the cause and we build a lot of things – it’s good for us. The better the construction industry is in Manitoba, in Canada, the better it is for us too.” Located at the corner of Westbrook Street and Lombard Avenue in Winnipeg, the Richardson Innovation Centre is not only near Richardson’s head office at Portage and Main, but is in a high traffic corridor – perfect for promoting Gold Seal Certification. Once complete, the world-class facility will complement Richardson’s food and ingredients division and will serve as a training facility for Richardson employees and customers, and as an education centre for food science students and the culinary community.
