34 BUILD MANITOBA winnipegconstruction.ca EFFICIENCY MANITOBA The province’s newest, leanest and greenest Crown corporation Say goodbye to Power Smart and hello to Efficiency Manitoba, the province’s newest Crown corporation. Established this spring, Efficiency Manitoba has taken the reins of power to promote, educate and create a leaner and greener Manitoba, while saving Manitobans money. The new kid on the block, or grid, is a standalone entity, removed from Manitoba Hydro, with a sole focus on achieving electricity and natural gas savings. Its new name is the result of the conclusion of a 30-year-old licensing agreement that had previously allowed Manitoba Hydro to use the Power Smart trademark. Efficiency Manitoba’s mandate of achieving electricity and natural gas savings in our province includes: • Achieving net savings of 1.5 per cent of electrical energy consumption in the preceding year. • Achieving 0.75 per cent of natural gas consumption in the preceding year in the province. • “Mitigating the impact of rate increases and delaying the point at which capital investments in major new generation and transmission projects will be required by Manitoba Hydro to serve the needs of Manitobans.” • Assisting Manitoba homes and businesses in reducing their energy costs. “Our mandate is very streamlined and specific,” says Efficiency Manitoba CEO Colleen Kuruluk. “We are mission driven; there are no competing priorities. To achieve our annual targets, we need to understand the entire delivery channel of getting the energy-efficient product or service to the end user so we can design and deliver our programs more effectively. The construction industry is well positioned to provide this advice.” Kuruluk says that consultation is foundational and they are creating a stakeholder engagement model to maintain and develop relationships with a wide variety of partners, including the ICI construction sector. “We are setting up a fairly robust model so we can engage the right people at the right time.
