industry. The Cook family has seen three generations involved with the MCAS on both the provincial and national level: Mike Cook Sr. (1952-54), Jack Cook (1964-68) and Mike Cook (1993-95). Four MCAS Presidents have been from C & E Mechanical Inc., the first being Ed Schoenroth, then his sons Art and Gary, and finally our current President, Scott Kerr. Ed, Gary and Scott have also served as National Directors with the Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada. There have only been three National Directors from MCA Saskatch- ewan who have served as Chairman/President of MCA Canada, the first being J. C. Stewart in 1957/1958. The following excerpt from the minutes of the 1958 national meetings captures and celebrates the character of Mr. Stewart: “In the last Annual Report it was noted that despite the acts of some who might have their own interests served by the destruction of this National Association – and there are some who would gain immeasurably if it should break – the soil around the roots of this Association which had become shaken would be enriched and the tree would grow stronger than ever, that has come to pass. The tree has grown. New faces have appeared with new and fresh approach- es to problems and the Association has progressed. Much of this strength is due to the very great contribution of our President, Mr. J. C. Stewart, the first representative from what was termed the forgotten province to occupy the top position this Association affords.” The General Manager goes on to say that, “Words cannot describe my thanks to this man who stepped in at a time of crisis and gave all he had with clean Christian fortitude, to build up this old and well-respected Association.” Ed Schoenroth served as President/Chairman of MCA Canada in 1980/1981. C & E Mechanical Inc. was started by Ed and his business partner Carl Young in 1958 under the name C & E Heating and Plumbing. In 1975 when Carl retired, Ed bought him out and introduced his sons Art and Gary into the business. Ed began his career in the trade in 1946 with a local plumber who won a contract to build wartime houses in Moose Jaw. In April 1946, the employer agreed to register him as an apprentice (Ed laughed that his mother had to approve his contract as he was underage). His certificate was signed by the Director of Apprentice- ship, Stanley Dorman. Ed’s certificate was only the fourth original apprentice certificate signed. Ed became heavily involved as a Charter Member of the United As- sociation of Plumbers and Pipefitters Union of Saskatchewan (UA), and later the President of the UA Local. He also spent several years as a Board Member of the Mechanical Contractors Association and, as previously mentioned, served as President of MCA Canada. Most recently David Flamand of Peak Mechanical Partnership served in 2017/2018. Dave says of his time as Chairman, “Personal- ly and for the MCAS I got exposure to a group of high performing, big picture thinking individuals that helped me in both my personal development and for many of my business decisions. The summer tour where I went from coast to coast to all the provincial associa- tion AGMs/Conferences was extremely rewarding.
