W hether you donate money or time, giving back is beneficial, and not just for the recipients. Research has shown that the old adage, “it’s better to give than to receive,” is true after all. The membership of the MCAS believes in this philosophy as they have proved time and time again the importance of giving back to their communities. Participating in charitable initiatives helps employees feel good about themselves and proud about where they work. MCAS GIVING BACK Every June, MCA Saskatchewan hosts two golf tournaments in the province and staff puts out the “cookie jar” in the hopes of filling it with cash donations for a chosen charity. Monies have been raised for the Construction Education Council, Operation Eyesight, and the Red Cross Relief Fund for Fort McMurray. We have also welcomed Pink Warrior to our tournaments with 2018 marking their final year of fundraising; it was time for them to take a well-deserved break from the countless volunteer hours they donate to this worthy cause. Pink Warrior fundraises for cancer research and awareness of all types of cancer. MCAS members have donated just under $100,000 to these groups. We are excited to announce that in 2019 we will be welcoming STARS Ambulance to our golf tournaments. Not only does the membership donate to these organizations, many are active in their home communities with various forms of charitable work. Here is just a sampling of how MCAS members are giving back. Brent Badrock, owner of Gibbon Heating & Air Conditioning (1998) Ltd., has always taken opportunities to give back to the community through donations and sponsorships of events. As a former Scout, he was a Scouts Canada Scout leader for several years. He has also participated in the Canadian Cancer Society’s Jail ‘n Bail and has sponsored the CHAMPS Camp for children with congenital or acquired heart conditions that live in Saskatchewan. However, Gibbon really kicked it up a notch in the fall of 2018 by launching our Gibbon Gives Back Campaign to support those less fortunate in Saskatoon and surrounding areas. In 2018, we gave away a new Lennox furnace to a very deserving cancer survivor and recent widow. This project had some challenges as we wanted to be respectful of the woman’s space and health and make it a super seamless installation. However, we also didn’t know if we were going into a project that would have lots of issues for the installation or not – age of house, etc. She’d been heating her home with space heaters and when we went to do a pre-install meeting, we saw her water heater was shooting flames out of the bottom. So, we also gifted her a new water heater because we couldn’t leave it as is. This was an extremely rewarding experience...to see how much our contribution impacted her life. It is something we are exceptionally proud of and we will run this campaign once, if not twice, a year to give back to our community. We are also exploring other ways to grow Gibbon Gives Back. GIBBON HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING (1998) LTD. Think a leaky faucet is no big deal? Think again. A faucet that drips just once per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons of water per year. 32 MCAS www.mca-sask.com COMMUNITY
