PRINTEMPS/ÉTÉ 2026 COUVERTURES CANADA 33 SESSION D'AFFAIRES F or the past 30 years, the Special Interest Group for the Dynamic Evaluation of Roofing Systems (SIGDERS) consortium has stood as a model for what can be achieved when industry-wide collaboration, scientific investigation and testing, and the practical appli- cation of research are brought together. On Saturday, May 30, 2026, SOPREMA’s Jean- François Côté will provide a comprehensive overview of the research initiatives led by the SIGDERS consortium. His presentation will explore the evolution of the research project and highlight the impact and improvements throughout the roofing sector. Research to reality Originally launched by the National Research Council of Canada to address a gap in code compliance for roof performance when subjected to wind loads, the consortium’s collaborative research efforts have produced two landmark outcomes: a standardized test method for evaluating wind resistance of roofing assemblies and a practical online calculator for determining wind loads on buildings. Navigating change With the incorporation of CSA A123.21 into the National Building Code of Canada 2015, contractors and designers faced a major shift in their practices. The transition revealed both challenges and practical lessons – some resolved, others still emerging. This session will highlight key issues roofing contractors should be paying attention to, explain how its tools continue to affect roofing practices and celebrate the achievements of the SIGDERS consortium while sharing lessons learned through years of research and insights for future improvements in commercial roofing across North America. A u cours des trente dernières années, le consortium du Groupe d’intérêt spécial pour l’évaluation dynamique des systèmes de couverture (SIGDERS) a servi de modèle pour ce qui peut être réalisé lorsque la collaboration à l’échelle de l’indus- trie, la recherche scientifique et les tests, et l’application pratique de la recherche sont réunis. Le samedi 30 mai 2026, Jean-François Côté de SOPREMA donnera un aperçu complet des initiatives de recherche menées par le consortium SIGDERS. La présentation portera sur l'évolution du projet de recherche et mettra en évidence les impacts et les améliorations dans l'ensemble du secteur de la couverture. Recherche vers la réalité Lancé à l’origine par le Conseil national de recherches du Canada pour combler un manque dans la conformité au code en ce qui a trait à la performance des toits lorsqu’ils sont soumis aux charges dues au vent, les efforts de recherche concertés du consortium ont produit deux résultats marquants : Une méthode standardisée pour évaluer la résistance au soulèvement par le vent des toits, ainsi qu'un outil pratique en ligne pour évaluer les charges de vent sur les bâtiments. Naviguer dans le changement Avec l’incorporation de la norme CSA A123.21 dans le Code national du bâtiment du Canada 2015, les entrepreneurs et les concepteurs ont fait face à un changement majeur dans leurs pratiques. La tran- sition a révélé à la fois des défis et des leçons pratiques – certains ont été résolus, d’autres émergent encore. Cette session mettra en évidence les principaux problèmes auxquels les entrepreneurs en couverture devraient prêter attention, expliquera comment ses outils continuent d’affecter les pratiques de toiture, et célébrer les réalisations du consortium SIGDERS tout en partageant les leçons apprises grâce à des années de recherche et d’idées pour des améliorations futures dans la toiture commerciale à travers l’Amérique du Nord.
