41 Issue 1 | Spring Edition | 2026 BUILD MANITOBA IMPACT BUILDERS managers who talk about interesting projects they’ve worked on.” Despite its name, the podcast isn’t exclusively focused on the construction sector. While roughly half of the episodes feature construction leaders, the rest spotlight entrepreneurs, executives and professionals from outside the industry. “There are a lot of lessons in these conversations that are transferable,” Pederson says. “It doesn’t really matter what industry you’re in. A lot of it comes down to professional growth and personal development.” As the podcast continues to grow, Pederson has lined up upcoming interviews with high-profile guests, including local business leaders, familiar Winnipeg faces and athletes turned entrepreneurs, such as Adam Bighill, captain of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers during their Grey Cup championship runs. TOP OF THE CHARTS After recording nearly 40 episodes and releasing more than two dozen, Careers Under Construction is gaining traction. The podcast has climbed into the top 50 business podcasts on Apple and Spotify, with a growing audience across YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram and Facebook. “When we first put it out, I honestly thought maybe four people would listen: me, my parents and my sister,” Pederson jokes. “There weren’t a ton of listeners at the beginning, but we gained traction pretty quickly by bringing on really interesting guests.” Like many podcasts, listener growth has been organic. Instead of paid advertising, Pederson relies on short video clips pulled from each episode to promote the show on social media. More than anything, though, he credits the show’s rising listenership to consistency. “That’s the number-one thing we care about,” he says. “I don’t care if we get 10 downloads or 10,000 per episode. I don’t even look at those numbers. I just want to release episodes consistently and have interesting people with really good stories.” A SECOND CAREER With numbers rising and episode ideas piling up, Careers Under Construction has evolved from a side-of-the-desk project into a second job. “I thought it would just be an hour a week,” Pederson says. “Pretty soon, though, I realized it’s like having a second full-time job.” Behind each episode are hours of outreach, research, editing, preparation and distribution across podcast platforms such as Apple Music, Spotify, Instagram and YouTube. It’s a lot, Pederson admits, but he’s grateful to have found a new creative outlet while providing a virtual stage for industry peers. With many more episodes to come, Pederson says his goal for Careers Under Construction remains unchanged from episode one: to be a place where honest career stories live and where listeners can find something useful, no matter where they are in their own journey. “Not every episode is going to be for everybody,” he says. “But if someone takes even one lesson from a conversation and applies it to their career, then we’ve done what we set out to do.” PODCASTS POWERING CONSTRUCTION CONVERSATIONS The Construction Life // theconstructionlife.com One of Canada’s most recognizable construction podcasts, offering unfiltered discussions on trades culture, mental health, business ownership and jobsite realities.
