45 Issue 1 | Spring Edition | 2026 BUILD MANITOBA IMPACT BUILDERS “In construction, business is based on relationships,” she says. “You have to show up. You have to be accountable.” Projects do not always unfold perfectly. What matters, she says, is staying present until the issue is resolved. That commitment to accountability became one of Umina’s defining values. As the company expanded, Calderon leaned into industry involvement. Engagement with the Winnipeg Construction Association (WCA) and Manitoba Women in Construction (MWC) opened doors and built credibility. But her leadership extends beyond her own company. Early in her time in Manitoba, Calderon took a business development course through SEED Winnipeg, a non-profit that supports immigrant, First Nations and low-income entrepreneurs. The experience resulted in a job helping others navigate the same system. “These things are not obvious when you are new,” she says. Last year, she stepped back from her formal role at SEED to focus on her growing company. But the requests for guidance did not stop. Her phone filled with messages from newcomers asking how to open a business or follow regulations correctly. Instead of meeting each person individually, she began recording short, practical videos on a dedicated Instagram page – @_servicesandproducts – and answering common questions and sharing them online: How do you register a business name? When do you charge GST? What permits do you need? “There is a huge need for practical information,” she says. Her passion also includes supporting women in construction. An early experience on a jobsite – where she was spoken to disrespectfully – reinforced the importance of self- advocacy. She addressed the issue directly. “I believe knowledge is important,” she says. “But confidence and communication are just as important. We all deserve respect.” Today, Calderon balances jobsite visits, business development, volunteer leadership and digital mentorship. She speaks candidly about burnout and the realities of entrepreneurship. Not every project is profitable. Not every day is easy. But her guiding principle remains simple: “If you want community, you have to give,” she says. “Support others. Show up.” She does not frame her success in terms of wealth or status. Instead, she measures it in stability, growth and impact. “We built a business. We built a home. We built a life,” she says. “If I can help even one person see that it is possible, then it is worth it.” Follow Umina Flooring Solutions on Instagram: 1.
