MEMBER MILESTONES
Perhaps one of the biggest shifts was the 
move to an employee-owned company in 
1983. As Ron recalls, “There were a few 
ways we could have gone. We could sell 
the company to a third party, we could 
maintain it in the family, or we could bring 
in the employees. I felt the employees 
helped build the company, so I felt that 
was the right answer.”
Seventeen employees took up the 
opportunity, and soon after, the company 
emerged as Graham Construction 
and Engineering Ltd. and moved its 
headquarters to Calgary. The following 
decades would prove fruitful, marked 
by iconic projects, North American 
acquisitions, the launch of Gracorp 
Capital Advisors Ltd. in the 1990s and 
office expansions throughout Canada. 
WINNIPEG JOINS THE FAMILY
It was 2011 when Graham set up shop 
in Winnipeg. “It was a natural growth 
opportunity,” says Drew Monnier, 
operations manager. “The company 
was established right next door, and we 
were – and still are – like-minded middle 
provinces when it comes to having 
stable economies for construction, with 
friendly, hard-working people.”
“The opportunities in Manitoba are 
extensive,” he adds. “With continued 
demand for both new construction 
and the repair and renewal of existing 
infrastructure, it was a natural place for 
us to grow our presence.”
It’s been a full schedule for the Winnipeg 
team over the past 15 years. The 
company has contributed to a multitude 
of different sectors, with a portfolio 
consisting of infrastructure projects, 
institutional work and manufacturing 
for some of the bigger names in the 
province, including Boeing, Diageo, 
Amazon, Manitoba Transportation and 
Infrastructure, and the City of Winnipeg. 
Some of its noteworthy projects include 
work at the Manitoba Legislative Building, 
the Manitoba Museum, Winnipeg Airport, 
Steinbach's new Southeast Event Centre 
and the Portage la Prairie interchange.
“While our history in Manitoba spans just 
15 years – a relatively short chapter in 
Graham’s 100-year story – we’ve had the 
opportunity to work on some remarkable 
projects and build some really strong 
relationships,” Monnier adds. “That’s 
really what Graham is all about.”
Today, the Winnipeg team is working 
on a particularly meaningful project: the 
$4.1M STARS Winnipeg Base Expansion. 
For years, the critical life-saving team has 
operated out of a hangar, small office 
and trailers meant to house awaiting 
pilots and medical teams. Soon, the 
expansion will introduce 4,300 square 
feet of new office space and 2,100 square 
feet of renovations, ultimately creating 
larger, more comfortable and permanent 
spaces with critical amenities for STARS 
teams to do their work and await life-
saving calls. Moreover, the expansion
