38 BUILD MANITOBA winnipegconstruction.ca MEMBER MILESTONES For 40 years, Penner Doors & Hardware has been opening doors across Western Canada – supplying the products, expertise and service behind some of the region’s most significant projects. What started as a Manitoba business has grown into a multi-city operation while remaining firmly rooted in family ownership and customer relationships. LOCATIONS, LOCATIONS, LOCATIONS Today, the company operates locations in Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Red Deer, Calgary and Edmonton. Lynne Fafard, Penner’s CEO, describes the company’s origins: “Henry Penner started the business in 1986, and in 2004, I became the CEO. In 2017, we rebranded and Penner became a division of our West Four Group of Companies, with our corporate office in Saskatoon. Being family-owned means decisions are made with care, integrity and a long-term mindset. It means valuing people over transactions, relationships over shortcuts and trust over trends.” “My father and uncle were in the supply, construction and manufacturing business from 1947 forward,” she adds. “Today, I partner with my sons, Mark and Jay. A cliché, perhaps, but this business is in our blood.” “It’s an obvious strength. Penner is the largest Canadian family-owned and -operated contract hardware business in the Prairies,” adds Rick Dziadyk, Penner’s senior vice president of commercial sales. “We see this milestone not as a finish line, but as just the beginning. We’re committed to continued growth, exceptional service and meaningful community involvement at every level.” PRODUCTS AND SERVICES Penner’s product line spans the needs of the building trade for Construction Specs Division 8 (Openings) and 10 (Specialties). This includes architectural hardware, hollow metal doors and frames, wood doors and building specialties. The category includes items such as stainless, acoustic wood and steel, and even blast-resistant doors and entries. The choices for hardware are virtually infinite, with everything from lock sets to door closers, with electrified devices and designer hardware rounding out the catalogue. “Penner also provides estimating and project management for our commercial, industrial and institutional construction customers,” Fafard adds. “Our team of technicians work closely with property management agencies to provide advice on remedial work requirements and on-site installation.” On the subject of growth, Dziadyk says, “Our newest business unit is something we call Penner DesignBuild.
